Putah Creek Cleanup & Trail Maintenance Day

About this event

The NCCFFI is partnering with our fly clubs to organize and execute a Putah Creek cleanup and trail maintenance project.

The cleanup date is scheduled for Saturday, January 10, 2026.

Putah Creek is located west of the town of Winters. It is a tailwater fishery below Lake Berryessa.

Putah Creek – Background Information

The Heritage and Wild Trout Program (HWTP) of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife designated the Putah Creek Interdam Reach (IDR) from Monticello Dam to Lake Solano (with five public access areas) as a Wild Trout water in 2014 and added Lake Solano in 2015. During the evaluation of the Putah Creek IDR and Lake Solano for Wild Trout designation, which took several years, Putah Creek Trout and its partners provided volunteer resources and support to HWTP, including angler use surveys, population monitoring, fish movement telemetry, and spawning and gravel scarification studies. As a Wild Trout water, CDFW has implemented a resource management plan to monitor and protect the wild trout fishery, while supporting public access and enjoyment.

Putah Creek is a designated Heritage and Wild Trout Water. For many fly clubs in the Bay Area and the Central Valley, Putah Creek is a vital trout destination. We hope that our fly clubs will reach out to their members and ask them to volunteer for the cleanup and trail maintenance project. Our goal is to get 50-60 volunteers for the day of the cleanup.

Putah Creek Cleanup/Restoration Project (January 10, 2026)

Over the years, Putah Creek Trout and its partners have undertaken a series of cleanups on Putah Creek, the latest of which took place on October 20th, coinciding with National Cleanup Day.  In conjunction with California Fish and Wildlife (and Yolo County), as well as other parties, NCCFFI is planning a general cleanup at Putah Creek on Saturday, January 10, 2026, which will cover three of the five access points and include garbage cleanup as well as trail maintenance work. Since Putah Creek is the closest Heritage and Wild Trout stream to the San Francisco Bay Area and Sacramento, we are asking local fly clubs to put the word out and solicit volunteers to help with this effort on January 10th.   We will send out additional information about this cleanup effort in December.

Event Details

The volunteers will assemble at about 8:00, location to be determined, and work until early afternoon. A lunch will be provided, location to be determined, after the cleanup.

The scope of the work is to clean 3 or 4 parking lots and the creek access points of trash and debris. There will also be trail maintenance, which will require clearing trails to a width of about 7 feet. The work will require Weed Whackers, Hedge Trimmers, hand pruning saws, Loppers, pruners, rakes, pitchforks, etc. It has been determined that chainsaws will not be allowed. If larger trees or limbs that require chainsaw work are discovered, we are to mark them for agencies to remove.

We hope to follow up with another date in May or June 2026.

We look forward to your help with another NCCFFI Conservation project.
